TUESDAY, July 24 (HealthDay News) -- Sitting for 20 minutes between 30-minute workout sessions burns fat faster than exercising without a break, Japanese researchers are reporting.

The researchers tested the blood of seven men -- average age 25 -- during and after exercise on a stationary cycle. The men participated in three different activities: one hour of exercise and one hour of rest afterward; 30 minutes of exercise followed by a 20-minute rest and then a second 30-minute workout followed by an hour of rest; and an hour of rest without exercise. The men sat in a chair during the rest period.

The workout that was broken into two half-hour exercise workouts resulted in more fat breakdown than the other two activities, the researchers report in the June issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology. The second half-hour workout also showed a greater boost of epinephrine and a rapid decrease in insulin as a result of lower plasma glucose. The researchers theorized that these chemical events contribute to the fat breakdown.

The researchers noted that the American College of Sports Medicine recommends moderate exercise for 45 to 60 minutes to burn fat. However, the researchers argue that their results show the benefit of a rest period during the workout.

This comes as a great help to all of those over-weight individuals who cannot do sustained exercise for 45 minute intervals. These people who have not exercised in months or years will benefit the most from this research. They will be greatly encouraged that with just a start of 20 minutes of workout , then 20 minutes of rest, followed by another 20 minutes of workout will do more than 40 minutes done all together.

Step 3: Set milestones

Milestones - you may be asking, "What is a milestone?" Well, it's simply setting little "mile markers" along the way, small goals that you can achieve as you continue down this new path of weight loss. It's hard to stay focused on a huge goal like "111 pounds" (my ultimate goal). But, it's easier to stay focused when I set a small milestone like "no pop for the next two weeks", or "every time you want a snack, eat a piece of fruit instead", or "lose at least 10 pounds over the next 8 weeks".

Step 4: Be accountable to someone

It is very important when trying to make a lifestyle change to find someone that you can trust to help hold you accountable. It's hard to do it alone. It is also difficult to ask someone to hold you accountable. So, pick the right person - someone you can trust, someone who will ask you the hard questions daily, someone you will ALLOW to ask you these questions, and someone who you will completely share to honestly. If you get frustrated when your spouse says "do you really think you should be eating that right now?", then I would suggest your spouse should NOT be the "accountability partner" for you. I found it was helpful to do a similar weight loss plan with someone else as long as they stayed as focused as I was. When they began to sway, it was easier to begin to sway myself. So, take some time to find the right person to help you succeed.

Step 5: Get started!

Well, now that you've decided WHY you want to lose weight, set a realistic weight loss goal, set your milestones, and found the right person to hold you accountable, it's time to get started! Decide on the plan to follow, pick a day to begin and get going.

Some people suggest it's hard to start on a Monday because if you have a "bad" weekend, you'll head into a weighing-in Monday morning with disappointment. So, you may want to choose another day of the week to begin. My weigh-in day has been Friday. It has worked well. It seems to make it easier to stay focused throughout the week, have a great "weigh-in" morning on Friday, which then sends me into a weekend with renewed vigor to stay focused.

Start with 4 sets of 30 seconds each and as you get stronger increase your time for each set until you reach 60 seconds for each set.

2. The second test is the same position as the first test except instead of your knees being the anchor point your feet are the anchor point. Maintaining the straight flat line bring your knees off the ground so that only your feet and forearms are on the ground. Again hold for the suggested 30 seconds in this straight, flat position. Your shoulder and hips should be flat and straight like a board. To reiterate if your goal is to lose weight fast there should be no sagging of the hips or arching. If you pass move to test #3. If not stay here and complete 4 sets of 30 seconds each set. Increase each sets time as you get stronger to 60 seconds.

3. If you have passed the first two tests then you are ready for test #3. Using a stability ball you will place your forearms on the stability ball instead of on the ground. This will create instability and force you to contract your muscles even more to maintain balance and stability. If you have made it this far your goal is to start with 4 sets of 30 seconds and as you get stronger work your way up to 4 sets of 60 seconds.

You may find at first that you aren't terribly fatigued from this or you don't feel that muscle exhaustion like you do with other exercises. If you are one that feels this way then wait until the next day and see how sore you are or try just one set of planks and see how tired your muscles feel. Add this exercise to your routine to lose weight fast and after a few months of these along with a proper carb rotation diet you will be ready to show off your washboard stomach to anyone and everyone.

Now, if you are in a hurry, and chances are great that you probably are, you can increase the walking time or miles per day. For example, you could set a goal to walk 3 miles per day. If you stick to that goal you will lose weight, and at 3 miles per day you can do it pretty quickly.

Adjusting your eating habits is not required but as I mentioned, it will help you to lose weight faster. Nothing drastic need be done unless you want to. Just cut back a little. The combination of your walking and cutting back your eating just a bit will work wonders. I know it sounds to simplistic to be true but it really works.

Now, if you want to speed things up even a little more, you can add strength training to your regimen. I found that if I worked out with some strength training on my Total Gym at home, it really helped take the weight off fast. The reason for that is you are building muscle, which helps to speed fat loss. Put that piece of paper somewhere you will see everyday. Try to put it somewhere you will see for most of the day when you have a bit of time to day dream. I'm a programmer and I work at home so it was stuck at the top of my computer screen. It doesn't have to be some where like this but you get the idea.

I was quite overweight and needed to lose a lot of weight, and the 2nd example is actually what I wrote down and put in front of me everyday. I was brutally honest with myself.

2 things will happen.

Looking at that piece of paper daily will switch your brain into overdrive.

2. Your brain will start to associate pain with what you've written down if you fail and it will force you to try your hardest to avoid the pain.

To increase your determination further read what you've written down OUTLOUD (in your head if people are around you and you are embarrased) several times - everytime you see that piece of paper.

A study reported on in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that green tea extract resulted in a metabolic increase and had a noticeable impact on the breakdown of fat within the body. The researchers found that he same amount of caffeine that was in the green tea, administered alone, failed to change energy expenditure in other studies. The results found a 4% overall increase in energy expenditure within a 24 hour period that could directly be tied to the green tea extract. This 4% happened during the daytime which translates into a 35-43% increase in caloric burn during the day.

The biggest fight most women engage in is the "battle of the bulge." And with summer just about upon us, women and men alike are looking at their waistlines with dismay.

Steam them with some non-fat butter one day, eat them raw with some non-fat dressing the next. Mix it up a little.

What can you drink? Tea, coffee, and water.

I know, I know. It's pretty strict, but remember, it's one week. And here are some ways to not only stave off hunger pangs but to keep your mind off food.

A hot shower in the morning, before you eat, will help your blood flow freely to all parts of your body and makes you less hungry.

A hot bath at night, preferably with some aromatic oils, or even scented candles, will relax you like you won't believe. Just don't choose chocolate scented candles!

After one week of this, you will be noticeably slimmer. Weigh yourself the first day, and then do not weigh yourself until the eighth day. This way you won't be discouraged and quit.

Again, I realize this diet is strict and looks hard. But, if you have a wedding to go to, or some other occasion that you feel you need to lose some weight fast, this will work without making you feel tired and dragged out.

There are two general approaches to Carb Rotating. The first approach is to follow a "no, no, no, high carb" program. There is a consistent transition with a "high, low, no" approach because every fourth day you repeat the cycle and you aren't depriving yourself of "carbs" for three days straight. And again: potentially triggering the elevation of lipoprotein lipase.

We consume too many "carbs", we consume improper "carbs" and we tend to not eat enough protein in our diet. But by following the guidelines laid out in a "high, low, no carb" program we are manipulating the blood sugars and insulin response in our body to achieve rapid fat loss. Rotating Carbs allows for your body to control and manipulate your blood sugars and insulin response, which allows your body to burn more calories as energy instead of storing these calories as fat. Hoodia is by now a well-established name in the weight-loss industry, and most people will know that these products come from a natural plant called hoodia.The Hoodia plant looks like a cactus, but is in fact a succulent, and has many varieties, but it is the Hoodia Gordonii alone which possesses the magic P57 molecule.
